A Brief Church History
Union Mission Baptist Church is what and where it is today because of those gone before us. As we reminisce back on the 1st Sunday in October 1866, we remember how Rev. D. Grantham, Rev. T. Luke, and Rev. Lee of Summer Grove Baptist Church met and organized in a brush harbor. Later, the group moved into a log house. Because of the tremendous growth in membership, the members decided to locate a site and build a church.
The following committee consisting of: Dea. Jakes Youngblood, Willis Pitts, Dea. K. Chambers, Dea. Moses Cooper, and Bro. Joe Grantham were sent out to locate a site for the church. Four acres of property was donated for a church site by Ms. Oil Cock. A frame church was constructed and given the name Union Mission Baptist Church. The Church was constructed under the leadership of Rev. Grantham, who pastored until 1894. From 1894-1940, several ministers have pastored here.
The church burned on January 6, 1940 and services were held in an old school house until a new church was constructed in 1941. This building remained until the church was remodeled and bricked under the leadership of Rev. D.A. Jones.
This church has had two brush harbors, three frame buildings, and a small brick building.
Fourteen pastors that served here faithfully from 1866 to 1975 were: D. Grantham, S. Nelson, I. Carthen, C. Sims, L.C. Capers, G.W. Lampkins, J.E. Evans, L.H. Haughton, R. Coleman, C. Shelton, J.D.Wiggins, L. Williams, M.L. Harris, and D.A. Jones. All of the aforementioned are now deceased.
Rev. Robert Nichols pastored from 1975 to the beginning of 1977. Rev. James E. Green was called as pastor in 1977.
Pastor James E. Green has served Union Mission Baptist Church faithfully, financially, spiritually, and physically for 30 years.
Under Pastor Green, we have grown from a small brick structure to an enormous sanctuary and fellowship hall.
Under a divine vision from God to Pastor Green, we have been fortunate to purchase property at 6025 Buncombe Road and are now in the process of relocating our church.
